    Muppets vs Sesame Street

    Muppets and Sesame Street are very much related to each other, but the main difference between them is that Muppets are some particular characters and Sesame Street is a television show which featured the Muppets.

    Muppets

    The Muppets were introduced in the Unites States of America in1954-55 by Jim Henson to start a program. Muppet characters were limited in number and were a type of puppet. The show was called The Muppet Show. The show featured the different Muppet characters like Miss Piggy, Elmo, Kermit the Frog, etc. Every episode of the show always featured the same characters as in any other TV serial today where the characters and the actors playing the characters are the same in every episode of the show. They were all trademarked characters and still are.

    The term “Muppet” was Jim Henson’s creation. He combined the words “puppet” and “marionette” to give a new name to the puppet characters of The Muppet Show. Recently, a movie has been released with the Muppet characters called The Muppets and has become one of the top grossers in the U.S.

    Sesame Street

    Sesame Street is a television show for children which was created in America by Lloyd Morrisett and Joan Ganz Cooney. This show featured a mixture of humor, cultural references, animation, and the Muppet characters. It was a family-oriented show sometimes with adult humor. This show was conceived for the first time in 1966 and later premiered on November 10, 1969 on PBS, Public Broadcasting Service.

    Sesame Street, when it started, was a program of its own kind for the first time which combined commercial television production with educational elements and techniques. It has managed to capture the attention of viewers over the decades because it keeps changing its format according to the cultural demands of viewers and their viewing habits. It was also the first show in America which used formative and summative research to figure out changes required in the content of the program and used to study the educational effect of the program on young children. This show was responsible for giving birth to the CTW model, a system which includes production, planning, and evaluation of TV serials along with collaboration between researchers, writers, and producers of a show.

    Sesame Street was funded, initially, by private foundations and the government but later became self-sufficient. By the 40th anniversary of the show in 2009, it had started being broadcast in 140 different countries and was the 5th highest rated television show for children. It has won 118 Emmy awards and 8 Grammy awards.
