    Hoodie vs Sweatshirt

Sweatshirts and hoodies are contemporary garments worn by many people no matter the age, sex, or other distinguishable characteristic. Nowadays, they are considered as utilitarian garments and can be worn for almost every activity.

A sweatshirt is a garment characterized as long-sleeved and a pullover garment. It covers the upper body, both the chest area and the arms. It can be worn as a stand-alone garment or with an additional one, accompanied by a shirt or T-shirt beneath the sweatshirt. As a pullover, sweatshirts don’t have buttons, hooks, or zippers for attachment. Sweatshirts are usually made of the following materials: wool, cotton, jersey, synthetic materials, or a combination of those materials.

The garment began as an article of clothing in the sports apparel. It is usually paired with sweatpants. Athletes often wore this piece of garment because it absorbs sweat and provides a free range of body movement during exercise and practices. Aside from mobility and sweat absorption, sweatshirts are good choices for people to wear in cold climates.
Like any specialized clothing, the sweatshirt found its way into the commercial market and has been used not only by athletes but also by the public. Due to its versatility, the sweatshirt became part of casual and everyday wear.

Meanwhile, a hoodie (also referred to as a hoody) is a garment that is a variation of the sweatshirt. A hoodie is the short form for “hooded sweatshirt.” This garment contains most of the sweatshirt’s characteristics with a few additions. The hoodie and the sweatshirt are collarless, oversized, and heavy used for athletic and casual wear and made from similar materials. They are also soft and comfortable in addition to providing warmth and insulation.

Both hoodies and sweatshirts are usually plain or often plastered with a logo from a particular affiliation or organization in the chest or back area. Both clothing items can sport pockets for hands. Aside from the similarities, the hoodie features the hood and the laces used to adjust the tightness of the hood. The hoodie can also be opened with buttons, zippers, and the like, or it can be a pullover like the sweatshirt.

The design of the hood is derived from the outfit or habit of medieval monks and priests.
A hoodie is a popular article of clothing for people affiliated with various subcultures like hip-hop, skateboarders, Goths, grunge, and other people that are labeled as outcasts (whether by an individual’s own volition or a society’s own perception). Aside from protection from the environmental elements, the hoodie projects an image of anonymity, mystery, and suspicion. It has been noted that some criminals take advantage of the clothing’s ability to be comfortable as well as hiding the face from recognition.
