Haunted Mansion

The Winchester Mystery House has made several lists as being one of the creepiest places on earth for its notoriously haunted reputation and bizarre architectural design. Sarah Winchester is the heiress to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company fortune and purchased the home in 1884.

The San Jose mansion sits on 150 acres and contains extensive rooms designed just like a maze with mile-long hallways, hidden passages, dead ends and fake doors that enter into blank walls or staircases. Sounds like something straight out of a Disney movie, only it isn’t.

This never-ending construction of the house is the result of not only the sadness Sarah Winchester felt after the death of her husband and daughter, but in an effort to remove the curse of “spirits seeking vengeance” for their deaths at the hands of the family’s rifle.

A medium explained to Mrs. Winchester, “[William] says for me to tell you that there is a curse on your family, which took the life of William and your child. It will soon take you, too. It is a curse that has resulted from the terrible weapon created by the Winchester family [the Winchester rifle]. Thousands of persons have died because of it, and their spirits are now seeking vengeance.”

    The house is ridiculously massive

In order to keep the peace with the spirits in her house, she needed to continuously add to the home or the curse would kill her too. And so it began in 1884 that Winchester began the construction of the bizarre mansion that continued for 38 years until her passing. In the home you will find rooms within rooms, chaotic floor plans and the room Sarah spent most of her time in which she called “The Séance Room.”

There are roughly 160 rooms, including 40 bedrooms, 2 ballrooms (one completed and one unfinished) as well as 47 fireplaces, over 10,000 panes of glass, 17 chimneys, two basements and three elevators.

There have been reports of numerous ghost sightings, cold spots, disembodied footsteps and whispering voices. Visitors say they have seen Sarah’s ghost wandering the rooms and halls of the home. Psychics have investigated the property and believe there are hundreds of other spirits who call the Winchester Mystery House “home.” No one knows for certain whether these spirits are really the souls killed by the famous Winchester rifle—or whether they are just restless spirits trapped in the house.
