Photographers Arthur Mole and John Thomas developed a series of iconic images using organized American soldiers. The duo achieved this 80 years after photography made its debut in 1839. Most of the images should look familiar because as they are our nation’s most influential individuals and organizations.
All of the images appear in the Library of Congress. Some of them use as many as 30,000 officers and men. Thomas was tasked with organizing the troops while it was Mole’s duty to climb an 80-foot viewing tower to capture the recognizable image.
